On the subtropical Japanese island of Amami, traditions about nature remain eternal. During the full-moon night of traditional dances in August, 16-year-old Kaito discovers a dead body floating in the sea. His girlfriend Kyoko will attempt to help him understand this mysterious discovery. Together, Kaito and Kyoko will learn to become adults by experiencing the interwoven cycles of life, death and love.

Director, scriptwriter, producer. Born in Nara, Japan, She made her first feature «Suzaku» in 1997 and became the youngest winner of the Camera d’Or at Cannes IFF. Participated in Cannes main competition in 2003 with «Sharasôju». Four years later she came back with «The Mourning Forest» and received the Grand Prix. She also received the Carrosse d’Or from the Directors’ Fortnight in 2009. She is prize winner of Rotterdam, Locarno, San Sebastian IFF. In 2012 her retrospective was held at la Cinémathèque Française. She is also the founder and the project producer of the Nara IFF.
