This year, we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the World War II. An open-air screening of Alexey German’s great film «Twenty Days Without War» (1977) is to become the program’s key event. And it is not by chance — so it seems — that we are celebrating this anniversary with the film which in fact has no war in it.
The battles in the Far East is a separate page in history, which is also featured in our program. The Soviet films «Order to Halt Fire» and «Order to Cross the Border» talk about the details. An account of events on the other side of the border can be found in «Empire of the Sun» (1987) by Steven Spielberg set during the Japanese occupation of China in World War II. Possessing an incredible directorial talent, he shows the events that might be taking place thousands of miles away, as if they were happening here and now. And this is exactly what one needs to truly honor the memory of war.
