Late 1942. Frontline newsman Lopatin comes to Tashkent on a 20-days leave after Stalingrad battle. Deafened and blinded by fire, he finds peaceful life bizarre and unusual: sodden adobe houses, snow mixed with mud, bread tickets tightly gripped in fists, communiqués from the Soviet Information Bureau, miserable conditions of life, killed-in-battle notices, and... theaters, which continued operating in the rear.
